Meet FIG Team

Shelene Giles, MS, BSN, BA, RN, CRC, CNLCP, MSCC, LNCC

Founder, President & CEO

Shelene Giles is the Founder, President, and CEO of FIG. Shelene has extensive knowledge and experience within the medical and vocational case management fields. She has been employed in these areas for over twenty years. Shelene holds college degrees in Nursing, Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, and Business Administration. She is a licensed Registered Nurse and her certifications include Certified Nurse Life Care Planner, Certified Life Care Planner, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor, Medicare Set-Aside Consultant Certified, and Legal Nurse Consultant Certified.

Over twenty-five years ago, Shelene Giles began her career in assisting those with disabilities in the community. She entered into a world of medical issues without full knowledge of the medical process. Shelene decided to compliment her profession of rehabilitation counseling with a nursing degree. Her attention moved toward understanding the effects, as well as the life-changing events of an injury/illness in catastrophic cases. Through the years, Shelene began to understand the impact of nurses in the litigation settlement process. She streamlined her experience and knowledge and focuses on determining the future cost of care in catastrophic cases. She provides services as a consultant and expert witness (state and federal court). Shelene is a member of several organizations with a concentration in catastrophic injuries/illnesses and life care planning.

Between 2007 – 2009, Shelene was elected by her peers and served on the American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners (AANLCP®) Executive Board as President-Elect, President, and Past President. She continues to actively participate in associations with an interest in the fields of Nurse Life Care Planning, Life Care Planning, Medicare Set-Asides, and Case Management. Shelene is an internationally recognized speaker, teacher, mentor, and coach, and has peer-reviewed publications in her practicing fields.

For over a decade, her interest has been in providing Life Care Plans for major burn survivors. She is the only Nurse Life Care Planner in the nation with a specialty in major burn cases. She has completed hundreds of Life Care Plans for burn survivors.

As a nurse, Shelene was taught to care for the patient/client as a whole. Shelene was impressed with her nursing instructors and their talent to simultaneously teach and care. This concept stuck with Shelene in her professional career. She thought, “what if this trait could be taught?” Not academically, but teaching by example. This is where ‘we practice what we teach’ became the philosophy of FIG. As her career advanced, her talents were recognized and Shelene found herself in the role of teacher, mentor, and coach. Since 2005, Shelene has been asked to teach and mentor colleagues through professional associations. She offers her teachings as pro bono to allow the associations to retain the revenue. She has gained a reputation for being an effective hands-on and compassionate teacher/coach. She continues to provide instruction, mentorship, and coaching to students and fellow colleagues. Course/conference evaluations rate Shelene as one of the highest-ranked presenters/teachers.

The FIG logo symbolizes the ‘Tree of Life.’ The Tree of Life is known for its ancient connotations of knowledge and prosperity. The FIG logo also represents Shelene’s personal statement of her Faith in God.

In these roles, she advised clients on healthcare legislative and regulatory matters that intersect with federal law, public policy, and business interests.  Through her insider’s knowledge of the U.S. Congress, she also advised clients on the federal legislative process and developed strategies for clients to navigate Capitol Hill and respond to changes in public health policy. She also advised clients on federal agencies and developed comprehensive governmental affairs strategies to guide clients through the operations of federal agencies.   Emily has represented medical and healthcare professional associations, organizations, hospitals and hospital systems, skilled nursing facilities, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, universities, and dialysis facilities. Prior to Squire Patton Boggs, Emily spent many years on Capitol Hill and served as the health policy adviser to a senior United States Senator, who is a member of the Senate Finance Committee.  This Committee legislates Medicare and Medicaid policy and played an integral role in the comprehensive health care reform legislation that was enacted. To this end, she played an active role in the 111th Congress’ health care reform debate and has an in-depth understanding of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which ultimately became law.   She is well-versed in health policy, specifically Medicare and Medicaid policy, and the Medicare End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) program. Emily has experience in a wide range of healthcare legislation including the Labor Health and Human Services Appropriations Bill, End-Stage Renal Disease, Long-term Care, Medicare physician reimbursement and fee schedules, Medicare Survey and Certification, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).  During her time on Capitol Hill, Emily advised the Senator on major healthcare legislation including the 2012 Prescription Drug User Fee (PDUFA) and Medical Device User Fee (MDUFA) Acts; Medicare and Medicaid Extenders Act of 2010; Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009; and Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008. In addition, Emily advised and guided the Senator through enacting important bipartisan legislation he championed: Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act and the Federal Research Public Access Act of 2006.

After college, Emily moved to Washington D.C. and worked for Van Scoyoc Associates assisting clients in identifying federal funding sources, congressional advocacy efforts, and in the development and execution of legislative strategies.

Emily graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Business Administration majoring in Health Care Management.  During college, she spent her summers interning in Washington D.C. for a U.S. Senator, U.S. Member of Congress, the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, and the Government Relations Department of the American Red Cross Headquarters.  She has also completed Public Health and Health Policy master-level classes at the George Washington University.

Emily has a love for animals (especially her chihuahua Dobby).  She enjoys traveling the U.S. and abroad, as well as collecting antiques.  Some of her favorite antiques to collect are furniture, ornate inkwells, Fenton Art Glass (baby blue), epergnes, and vanity sets.

Kim Wages, RN, BSN, BBA, CRRN, CNLCP

Instructor & Project Manager

Kim Wages FIG Education

Twenty-seven years ago, Kim Wages determined she wanted to become a registered nurse to assist people to regain their health.

However, she needed to return to college.  Kim previously obtained her Bachelor’s in Business Administration from Georgia College in Marketing.  She worked in the business marketing arena for several years.  Kim decided to return to her Alma Mata in 1992 to obtain her degree in nursing. She worked in many areas of the hospital while in nursing school but spent much of her time working on the Ortho/Neuro Unit.  Kim gained further valuable experience as an RN on the Ortho/Neuro Unit.  Subsequently, she took a position in case management helping people to return to work after they recovered from their on the job injuries.  Kim began studying a nursing specialty as a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) 1997.

While employed in the role of case management, Kim assisted in providing care to many catastrophically injured people.  She realized there was more to learn about helping people recover after these injuries. Her mentor, Shelene Giles shared the growing trend in the field of Nurse Life Care Planning.  The process was to assist people with catastrophic injuries obtain medical care and financial support related to those injuries.  Kim took a course in Nurse Life Care Planning and obtained certification (CNLCP) 2004.  In pursuit of learning more about the process of helping these clients, she learned there was another piece of the puzzle which is Medicare Set-Aside (MSA’s) reports.  Kim began contacting insurance carriers, employers and attorneys regarding her new abilities to prepare these plans and reports.  Her previous marketing degree was instrumental in developing business.  Eventually, she started her own company promoting services to assist these catastrophic clients.

Kim has shared her knowledge and passion for Nurse Life Care Planning with other nurses for several years.  She initially assisted seasoned Nurse Life Care Planners in preparation/research of Nurse Life Care Plans.  Kim has prepared many plans focusing on a variety of conditions including head injuries, spinal cord injuries, chronic pain, and cerebral palsy.  Also, she has prepared and assisted others in preparing many nurse life care plans for burn survivors.  Kim has completed hundreds of MSA’s.  Kim is an active member in several organizations with interests in these various nursing specialties.  She served on the American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners (AANLCP) Executive Board as Secretary in 2009.

Kim’s passion is traveling and scuba diving.  She has been to many tropical destinations with her husband Mel.

Sandra has been working in the medical field for over 25 years and started working in the Life Care Planning field over 16 years ago.

As a nurse, she performed charge nurse duties on medical-surgical and women’s health units. She also worked as a staff educator and assistant manager on a rehabilitation unit and performed both admission assessments and discharge planning roles.  She has also worked in Hospice care and was a pioneer in her small community outside of Los Angeles for those patients under service with a large Hospice company located in Los Angeles.  She managed the patients in her community working directly with the local physicians, pharmacists and equipment companies until the patient population there grew, and an entire satellite office was established.

As a nurse practitioner, she worked in large practices that specialized in neurology/neurosurgery and pain management.

As a Life Care Planner, she worked under an experienced life care planner where she learned the purpose and process of preparing life care plans.  She found the work stimulating and enjoyed the combined medical and legal aspects of working the case.  She then decided to take a full educational program in life care planning and became certified as a Life Care Planner in 2006.  She has prepared hundreds of Life Care Plans with an emphasis on traumatic brain injury cases.

Sandra was a founding board member of the California Association of Nurse Practitioners High Desert/Santa Clarita Chapter from 2014 to 2016.  She has been a reviewer for Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners publications in 2014 and 2019.  She has been a co-author and reviewer for the American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners Core Curriculum.  She has written articles for the Journal of Nurse Life Care Planning on Pain Management.
